The purpose of this Overview Module is to introduce you to some of the important concepts related to practices for teaching reading to those with learning disabilities. These concepts and practices are based on a large body of research findings that have been emerging over the past twenty years. Recent research findings and syntheses have provided even more guidance in helping us understand how we should approach the teaching of reading to students with learning disabilities. This Overview Module contains lessons that will introduce you to definitions of learning disabilities and the ways reading disabilities can affect the development of literacy skills in classrooms. In addition, the lessons in this module will describe some critical dimensions of instruction and assessment that must be included in all instruction for all individuals with learning disabilities. These dimensions are incorporated into the descriptions of the research-based practices and interventions presented in the other Academy modules. As you work through the other modules, you may find that it is helpful to refer back to the important examples and definitions presented in this overview module. |
